Vår kommentar: Under er et utdrag fra det en rektor skrev til foreldre som søker langt bedre matematikkundervisning for sitt barn enn det som er tilgjengelig på den lokale skolen. Det er skremmende og trist å oppleve i 2008 at noen rektorer tror at de har mulighet og rett til å hindre elever i å velge blant undervisningstilbud (særlig i enkeltfag) – undervisningstilbud som i mange tilfeller er av langt høyere kaliber enn de som er tilgjengelige lokalt – og at de tror at det er deres oppgave å gjøre det.

Jeg har fått kopi av en e-post sendt xxxs kontaktlærer der det fremgår at xxx fra (dato) vil bruke sin matematikktid i skolen på et vesentlig internasjonalt/russisk matematikkprogram.
xxx skole godkjenner ikke en slik ordning. Så lenge xxx er elev ved xxx skole må han følge undervisning i matematikk etter de læreplaner xxx skole følger. Han får altså ikke anledning til å bruke tid på skolen på det matematikkprogram som er angitt i e-posten.
Bra dette ble oppklart nå, så xxx slipper å møte på skolen med et opplegg han ikke får anledning til å gjennomføre.

Vår kommentar: Med No Child Left Behind-loven i bakhodet er det helt selvfølgelige oppfølings-spørsmålet “hvor mange norske skoler er i samme tidsrom blitt stengt av akademiske grunner (typisk på grunnlag av dårlige Nasjonale Prøver-resultater over flere år)??”

Our comment: vouchers, typically used for connecting students with master teachers all over the world, are even more important for poor students – be they in urban or rural areas – than they are for more affluent ones.

I’m Not Running for President, but …
WATCHING the 2008 presidential campaign, you sometimes get the feeling that the candidates — smart, all of them — must know better. They must know we can’t fix our economy and create jobs by isolating America from global trade. They must know that we can’t fix our immigration problems with border security alone. They must know that we can’t fix our schools without holding teachers, principals and parents accountable for results. They must know that fighting global warming is not a costless challenge. And they must know that we can’t keep illegal guns out of the hands of criminals unless we crack down on the black market for them.
The vast majority of Americans know that all of this is true, but — politics being what it is — the candidates seem afraid to level with them.

- Teknologien gjør det nå mulig å gi elever på alle ferdighetsnivåer tilpasset undervisning i enkeltfag uten å gå inn i eiendomsbransjen.
- For ikke bare den mikroskopiske faktiske eliten men et større antall gode elever er det er nå >10 norske vgs’er som tilbyr International Baccalaureate, et opplegg som på “High Level” gir mulighet til å strekke seg langt. Men det er ikke mulig for dette større antallet gode elever å nå det internasjonale topp 1%-nivået (nivået som gir opptak ved de beste universitetene) hvis de begynner et aksellerert løp først i videregående skole.
- At den faktiske eliten ikke er 50-100 ganger større skyldes at det norske utdanningstoget sporer av, i forhold til internasjonalt nivå, allerede fra tidlig i barneskolen – utdanningseffektiviteten ligger på bare 2/3 av høyt internasjonalt nivå. Brøken gjør det nærliggende å tenke på marathon – løper du den på 2 timer blir du verdensmester, gjør du det på 3 timer får du aldri navnet ditt i avisen. Og i landene med best utdanningseffektivitet er det en stor grad av fordypning (ihvertfall blant de beste) fra rundt 6.-7. klasse.

Education as a civil right needs strong articulation by a leader willing to say it like it is…
Whether you are black or white, Republican or Democrat, it is undisputed that those with the most education have the best chance of realizing their dreams, and that race becomes less of a factor for those most educated.
While I am not endorsing Mayor Bloomberg for President, I am endorsing the idea that a Bloomberg candidacy centered on education as a civil right would be good for America.

The sad truth is this: Inner-city public schools are “broken” because many teachers — including minorities — don’t know their craft and aren’t being held to high standards. The mostly minority school boards in mostly minority districts don’t seem to care. Moreover, the inequality of these schools has next to nothing to do with “inadequate” funding and everything to do with the stranglehold teachers unions have on our public officials. A countervailing parents “union” is long overdue — but no national civil rights group dares to organize one for fear of the trade unions.
